Most adult training is done on keelboats with a maximum of 4 participants but we do training on catamarans and dinghies on request. The 2-day courses are normally run over weekends and there are two levels, Competent Crew and Inland Skipper under 9M. Most people are capable of crewing or even skippering their own boat after the
beginner’s course. The advanced course teaches further techniques such as reefing and sail changes, picking up a mooting under sail, man overboard drills, spinnaker work etc.
Appropriate South African Sailing (SAS) certificates are awarded
What you need
Buoyancy aid (lifejacket), We do have some but sizes could be a problem, if it is your intention to continue sailing after the course then I would recommend buying your own. South African Sailing (SAS) import the latest RYA recommended ones which we believe are cheaper than the local boat shops @ R650.00 each inclusive of courier charges from Mossel Bay. If you wish to order please let us know soonest so that I may order them timeously. The aids are highly adjustable but I do need to know your size – S, M, L, XL, XXL.
Normally on keelboats we do not sail with Buoyancy aids unless in strong weather conditions or in cases where persons can’t swim or are nervous , there must however be an aid on board for everyone and persons under age 16 must wear them at all times.
Shoes – sailing shoes or takkies with good grip that will not leave marks on the deck.
Sun screen cream – the UV factor is magnified on water.
A hat – wide brimmed if possible to protect from the sun.
Sailing gloves, cycling gloves will suffice, to protect your hands from the ropes*. Again only buy gloves if you believe you will continue sailing

Change of clothing in case we get wet. (hot showers are available 24/7)
Waterproofs in case it rains.
We will begin with a little bit of classroom stuff – safety, the parts of the boat, the wind and sailing techniques. Most of the time will be spent on the water and you will do the sailing while I shall be the passenger A notebook (the writing kind) would be a good idea.
We look forward to seeing you there.
